SEO
Search Engine Optimisation is the practice of making your website easier for Google to find, understand, and recommend.
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the practice of improving your website so it ranks higher in search engine results. When someone searches for something related to your business, SEO determines how likely they are to find you.
SEO isn't about tricking Google — it's about making your website genuinely useful, well-structured, and easy for both humans and search engines to understand.
The three pillars of SEO
1. Technical SEO: Ensuring your website is fast, mobile-friendly, secure (HTTPS), crawlable, and properly structured. This is the foundation — without it, great content won't rank.
2. On-page SEO: Optimising individual pages with relevant keywords, clear headings, descriptive meta tags, internal links, and quality content that answers searchers' questions.
3. Off-page SEO: Building your website's authority through backlinks from other reputable sites, online mentions, social signals, and brand presence.
Key SEO concepts
- Keywords: The words and phrases people type into Google. Your content should target keywords that your potential customers are searching for.
- Meta tags: The title and description that appear in search results. These should be compelling and include relevant keywords.
- Internal linking: Linking between pages on your own site helps search engines understand your content structure and distributes authority.
- Page speed: Faster pages rank higher. Google has explicitly stated that page speed is a ranking factor.
- Mobile-first: Google primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. If your site doesn't work well on phones, your rankings will suffer.
SEO in the age of AI
SEO is evolving. With Google's AI Overviews and the rise of AI assistants, the game is changing:
- Zero-click searches: AI-generated answers mean fewer people click through to websites. Your content needs to be so good that it earns the click even when an AI summary is available.
- GEO: Optimising for AI recommendation (not just Google ranking) is becoming increasingly important.
- E-E-A-T: Google values Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness more than ever. Original insights, first-hand experience, and demonstrable expertise are essential.
SEO is a long-term investment. It takes months to see results, but once your site ranks well, it generates consistent, free traffic — unlike paid advertising, which stops the moment you stop spending.
